Cheap Ink Cartridges - Will They Harm My Printer?
It is important to note that in the current market, Manufacturers of printers are putting the actual printers into the market at very low prices and in many cases the entire printer is less than the cost of the printer ink cartridges that they use.
Of course they get around this by supplying "sample" cartridges with your original purchase, or in other cases they will only include one cartridge.
So don't get caught in the theory that it is cheaper to keep buying new printers all the time.
This ultra competitive market place for the printer hardware leaves the manufacturers with no where else but he printer ink cartridges to make their money. So naturally they are going to put as much propagander out there about the reasons why you should use their consumables for your printing needs.
Are There Cheap Ink Cartridges To Avoid?
Absolutely, I am not here to say that all Printer Ink Cartridges are made equal. That is just not the case. Lets take a look at what you can expect to find.
Firstly you will find the cost of the original or genuine item. Lets say it is $20.00. Then you might find a compatible around the $12.00 to $15.00 mark, and in some cases you may also find some alternatives around the $8.00 to $10.00 prices.
Secondly you can have a look at where you can buy your printer ink cartridges. You have your department stores, Cartridge specialty stores, computer stores, and a variety of non related stores like $2.00 shops, newsagencies and of course the markets.
It would be reasonable to say that no matter where you buy from or at what pricing level you buy, you will be unlucky to come across Cheap Ink Cartridges that will actually cause harm to your printer.
However there are many Cheap Ink Cartridges that will not perform to the same quality standard as the genuine item.
Now this may not be an issue you for you. If your main printing requirements are that the text can easily be read and photos give a good example of the original image, then you may choose to go for the cheapest you can get.
My only reccomendation here is that you buy from someone you can trust. That might include any of the types of stores that I have listed above. So if you frequent the markets and have every reason to believe that the store selling you the Cheap Ink Cartridges is going to be there every week, AND will look after you if the cartridge does not work, or in the unlikely event that it causes harm to your printer, he will have it fixed or replaced for you.
If on the other hand you expect your cartridges to perform as the originals do, then as a general rule stores like $2.00 shops, news agencies and the markets are often only interested in buying and selling "the cheapest" available. Unfortunately this mostly leads also to a lesser standard of quality. Once again if you have a good relationship with them by all means give them a go, they may be good enough for what you require.
That does not mean to say that Department stores, specialty stores and computer stores are all good. I still recommend you ensure they are a reputable dealer, and have a genuine interest in providing a value for money product, not just the cheapest product.
Questions To Ask When Purchasing Cheap Ink Cartridges;
Are the inks as good as the genuine cartridge?
Will the inks print exactly the same colors as the genuine? (don't be afraid if you here the answer no. in fact it is likely that there will be some minor differences)
Are the cartridges filled to the same capacity?
My printer is still under waranttee. What is your policy if your cheap ink cartridges cause harm to my printer? (you want to hear no hesitation or blurb, the retailer should be confident that this is very unlikely to happen but that they will repair or replace your printer - naturally they will want independent assessment of the fault)
What is there policy if the cartridge is not performing as expected?
These types of questions should not be unfamiliar and an experienced retailer should be able to answer them with out fear or animosity. If you are comfortable with the response and that the business will be there tommorrow if you need to come back, I recommend you give them a go.
They are not likely to go through those types of questions with confidence if they do not have confidence in their product.
Buying Cheap Ink Cartridges on the internet;
If you are like me and you like to save time buying this type of consumable over the phone or the internet, then just follow the same buying principles. Simply go to the contact page and either give them a call (note you may not get an answer, many online stores are not really geared to receiving phone calls) or send them an email.
Take note of what they promise in regard t how long it will take to respond, and hold them to it. If they do not answer in the designated time frame in relation to a sales inquiry, how long is it going to take if a problem arises.
In any case you should get a feeling of comfort or discomfort during this process, if the email is personally answered and care has been taken to answer ALL of your questions, you are probably on a winner. On the other hand you may simply get referred to a terms of service page on their website. I personally would not be comfortable with that store!!!
Buying Cheap Ink Cartridges- A Summary;
Firstly they are most unlikely to cause harm to your printer.
Secondly there are quality issues, but that does relate to what your expectations are, and what is rubbish to one user may be perfectly acceptable to another, this is purely a matter of expectations.
Finally, selling is all about understanding that people buy from people that they know, like and trust. So if you buy from a retailer that you know like and trust, or at least like and trust, even if you do buy Cheap Ink Cartridges that do not meet with your expectations, you will have placed yourself in a position to easily have the problem resolved without animosity.
